"This is Thozha....!!! The biggest film ever to be made in my native place called Madurai by a team of 1000's of people.. A small boy from the most despised community in Tamil Nadu who lost his parents at a very early age, is forced to live with his elder sister for whom he has nothing but love and admiration. He rises from a local wrestling champion to a national star. The story is about people around him who make sacrifices for him, the girl whose life is destroyed by jealousy, the villagers who turn against him and try to kill him when he becomes a star. The inspiration for this film came from the short story written by Thamizh Selvan. He was born in 1988 and died in 2007 when he was just 19 years old due to heart disease. The full story is available on facebook by his friends. "Thozha" stands for "madhaviya" in the tamil language. Filming took place in 11 locations including East Madurai, Palani, Solaiyur, Valliyur and Thirukovilur.The film was premiered to a mixed response from fans and critics alike. Many critics found the film's story unoriginal and unfulfilling compared to director Bala's previous works such as "Kannathil Muthamittal", but praised the technical aspects of the movie and its cinematography and music. The film's trailer, which was released on 16 March 2016 sparked controversies as social media erupted with rumors that actors like Karthi and Vijay Sethupathi were making cameo appearances. The rumors were later proven false; however, the trailer also drew criticism for its similarity to the movie "Raja Rani". The film's producer has filed a police complaint against miscreants who hacked into their website and uploaded an extremely edited version of the trailer which contained extreme violence, abusive language and nudity.
